"Where Mary Joseph?"
Two-year-old Eli sat on my lap in total awe. We were at a church Christmas party where the stage had been set with a most exquisite nativity scene; the manger comfortably nestled a real baby boy, livelambs softly bleated nearby. The scene was illuminated in soft bluelight but for the baby that glowed in pure white. Eli pointed and excitedly whispered to me, "Mary Joseph!" The program continued with scripture and hymns, recounting the events of that sacred night whenthe King of Kings was born. The curtains closed, signaling the end of that part of the program. Eli sat still on my lap, absorbing the impact of the beautiful story.
The nativity scene was quickly ushered off the stage and only a few minutes later the curtains opened again, this time revealing a large Santa Claus that roared a boisterous "Ho, ho, ho" and began tossing bags of candy to the children. The peacefulness of the nativity scene was replaced with immediate noise and chaos as children stormed the stage to get at the candy and Santa. Eli was motionless, watching it all. Then he turned his face up to mine, a look of horror and despair in his eyes, "Where Mary Joseph?" It was a profound lesson for us.
This little child, barely two yearsaway from his heavenly home, didn't need or want the tradition of Santa in his Christmas, he needed and he wanted the beautiful truths about Mary, Joseph, and the little babe in swaddling clothes. He didn't want them edged out or sharing the stage with Santa, he wanted them, and only them. We made a decision that day not to include the worldly tradition of Santa in our Christmases and not to include the worldly traditions of bunnies and baskets in our Easters. We determined to give our children what they deserved, what they needed and wanted, The Savior. "And that wicked one cometh and taketh away light and truth, through disobedience, from the children of men, and because of the tradition of their fathers. But I have commanded you to bring up your children in light and truth." (Doctrine and Covenants 93:39-40).
Eli is a man now, a good man, a devoted disciple of Christ. He and his siblings have never had to divide their attention, devotion, or loyalties between Jesus Christ and the politically correct substitute, Santa Claus. They have never been confused about who we worship in our home, or why, and it has been a very good thing. May you have an abundance of the Savior in your Christmas celebration this year.
