Baby Bonnet
Sledding the Dunes
We took a road trip over spring break and spent a day sledding down the sand dunes. It is a favorite thing to do; we have learned over the years how to wax the sleds for speed and where to find the best dunes. The steepest and highest dunes are far from the beaten path, requiring searching and effort to get there. But we think it is worth the effort. We found the best one ever this time and spent the morning enjoying it. We hiked back to the car for our picnic lunch and watched others sledding down the much smaller dunes near the parking. I thought it sad that they didn't know that a ten minute hike over those three far dunes would get them to the best dune ever. It was sad, too, that they didn't know about how much better the experience would be if they waxed the sleds. We offered wax to one family, but they had wax, just didn't care to take the trouble. An interesting analogy of life and its many choices. How often do we "settle", just because we don't know that something better is just beyond what we can see; how often are we satisfied, just because we think "better" or "best" won't be worth the effort? As the children finished lunch, they took their sleds up the dunes near where we had parked. They seemed to enjoy them nearly as much as "the best dune ever". Maybe that is another lesson to learn: even if it's not the best, it can be good.
