Happy Fathers Day!

Happy Fathers Day to all of you Dads out there! Hooray for you and all you do to provide for, protect, and preside over your families. To those Dads who tell made-up bedtime stories, who enjoy playing catch with their little ones as much as watching the big game, who go to parks and zoos, camping and fishing; who teach the joy of hard work and the satisfaction of a job well-done, who are not afraid of dirty dishes and diapers, or of shedding tears; who admit your mistakes and forgive others of theirs, who listen more than lecture; to you who are doing your best to keep your priorities strait, to you for whom each child is a precious treasure and their mother the best thing that ever happened to you: you're doing great, Dad!

Wow, and if not, that's a great list of things for me to work on!

My, this is a tall list of virtues for a father. I suspect that dads cannot do all these things all of the time, but must be diligently working at it. I once read a poem that had a passage in it that goes like this: "When talking we compare our experiences and measure our maturity by how long we can go without saying goodbye". Even though I take it out of context for this thought, I believe that's the goal as our children mature.. to keep them in contact for as long as possible. I would hope that would be the goal of every father, to never lose contact no matter what: Keep them talking, keep telling those made up bed time stories even to the grand children, play catch & forget the "big game", shed plenty of tears..both when they are winning and losing, admitting mistakes, and all the other things you have listed. Is there really a man out there like this? I suppose if there is, he would never confess his identity. All the attention / scrutiny would be more than he could take while others sought to find his faults (there would be many I'm confident). Imagine for a moment how wonderful it would be in this world if these things were taught from father to son, grandfather to grandson. I so much appreciate your insights and considerable wisdom that come through in your musings.

Is there really a man out there like this? Perhaps he is the sum of all my hopes and dreams...
