the mighty pepperoni

A couple of weeks ago I made pepperoni bread sticks, one of the favorite things to have with nearly any meal. However, I couldn’t find the pepperoni I thought I had and so made them plain bread sticks, a bit disappointing, but none-the-less a delicious addition to our supper. As I served them, hot from the oven, coated in garlic butter and grated Parmesan cheese, I explained to my boys that they were without pepperoni. They immediately burst into crocodile tears, lamenting that life just couldn’t go on… And so that became the scapegoat for all that’s wrong with the world. “That nasty paper cut was all because there was no pepperoni that time.” “We couldn’t find a parking place because we ran out of pepperoni.” “My alarm didn’t go off because the pepperoni was missing.” “Do you suppose BYU lost that basketball game because of a pepperoni shortage?” “We’d have world peace but for the lack of pepperoni.” All in good fun, but believe me, I’m keeping a good supply of pepperoni from now on. I don’t want to be responsible for the consequences, now that I know the power of the mighty pepperoni. I have a good mind to dice some up in the morning oatmeal one of these days, just for good measure.
